Teams sought for flag football tournament

Helus Bowl coming to NPHS in October

The Fallen Officers will host the inaugural Sgt. Ron Helus Blue Bowl, a coed flag football tournament, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sun., Oct. 6 at Newbury Park High School, 456 Reino Road.

The event will benefit the family of fallen Ventura County sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus and include a brief memorial service to honor Helus followed by a presentation to the family.

The coed tourney is open to players ages 12 and up. Individuals, families, friends, coworkers, companies and organizations can register a team to play.

Teams can have up to 12 players. Play will be seven on seven.

The winner of the Blue Bowl will receive the Ron Helus Trophy and will be invited to national Mission 2244 Gala held March 13 in Naples, Fla.

The cost to enter is $600 per team. Each member will receive a Blue Bowl T-shirt, lunch and soft drinks. Concessions will be available.

Former and current NFL players will be on hand for autographs and pictures.

Spectator admission is free. Donations will be accepted.

Helus was shot and killed when he responded to an active shooter at the Borderline Bar and Grill on Nov. 7, 2018.

A 29-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Helus entered the building and exchanged gunfire with the shooter. Because of his actions, the sergeant saved lives.

The Fallen Officers, which supports the Robert L. Zore Foundation, aids the families and departments of police officers that have been killed in the line of duty across the United States.

The team registration deadline is Oct. 4.
