For the second time in four years, the Conejo Valley school board is mulling a move to Wednesdays.
The topic came up Dec. 13 at the last board of education meeting of the year when new trustee Lisa Powell—sworn in that evening—broached the issue during a discussion of the board’s proposed meeting dates for the remainder of the 2022-23 school year and for fall 2023.
Both the council and the school board have met on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. for many years, neither able to come to an agreement on coordinating schedules to avoid conflict. The evening of Dec. 13, for example, both bodies held their swearing-in ceremonies for newly elected officials.
“I know it’s not always easy,” Powell said. “I think it’s really important for our community to be able to have access to both of these bodies and certainly for ourselves to be able to go and participate in City Council if we want to.”
One idea might be to move meetings to Wednesdays, trustee Karen Sylvester suggested.
Superintendent Mark McLaughlin said that changing the day for board meetings has been discussed in the past.
“We’ve worked on this a couple different times with the city, and I think we’re flexible in working that out,” he said.
“I would agree that in order for it to work we would probably need to switch to a Wednesday evening,” McLaughlin said. “That wouldn’t change any of our district workload. We would still post the agenda on Friday afternoons at 4:30 and give the board another day to go through in preparation for the meeting.”
“Maybe it is time that we look at switching the date so that we are able to have community members participate in both meetings if they wish.”
Trustee Cindy Goldberg agreed and added that Conejo Recreation and Park District meetings are on Thursdays so Wednesdays make sense.
Lauren Gill, sworn in that night as board president after being nominated by fellow trustees, led a vote to table the matter until the board’s first meeting of 2023 on Tues., Jan. 17.
The City Council is not scheduled to meet that evening.
