Slurry seal to be
applied to some
asphalt streets

The City Council recently awarded a construction contract for the annual slurry seal program in various neighborhoods throughout Thousand Oaks to Roy Allen Slurry Seal Inc.

The contract for $862,362 will seal cracks and fill voids on asphalt. The procedure should prevent further deterioration and improve and prolong the life of city streets, said Joe Bravo, street maintenance supervisor.

The program is expected to take two months, from Aug. 2 through October.

Water pressure to
improve in areas
of Ventu Park

The City Council recently awarded a construction contract for the installation of a waterline to Toro Enterprises Inc.

The $137,835 contract calls for the installation of about 640 feet of 10-inch diameter waterline in 15-foot wide easements through two private properties between Kathleen and Rudolf drives and along Rudolf Drive.

The new pipeline will provide a looped system for this area of Ventu Park. It’s expected to take three months for construction.

“This project is part of the city’s commitment to its water customers to provide a reliable water supply and fire flow capability”, said public works director Mark Watkins.

Notifications to affected property owners were distributed in May, and the contractor will send additional updates before construction begins.

Westlake to get
new landscaping

Thousand Oaks recently approved a contract with Venco Western Inc. for installation of new landscaping along the median of Townsgate Road between Village Glen Avenue and Lakeview Canyon Road.

The project will reduce water use by replacing grassy areas with drought-resistant plants. “In fact,” said public works director Mark Watkins, “over 10,000 square feet of turf will be replaced with native California species, including day lily, society garlic, bird of paradise, carpet roses and flax.”

The ground level inside the median will be depressed to capture and retain more rainwater, which will reduce runoff and improve water quality in nearby Westlake Lake.

The $45,400 project will introduce weather-based smart irrigation controllers and low emitting bubbler heads. The city expects a water savings of up to 20 percent. Construction is expected to start in late August and take about two months.
