Don’t extend petition deadline

In “the-dog-ate-my-homework” news, Karen Meyer, retired school secretary and leader of the Recall Linda Parks group, wants extra time beyond the legal deadline to gather enough signatures to force a special election.

The reasons given by Meyer for wanting more time is the elections division and voters will be too busy Sept. 14 with the governor’s recall. If that is their argument then give them two more days (until Sept. 16).

If this is a legitimate effort, why do they need special consideration? Given the estimated $500,000 cost related to a special election, it certainly doesn’t seem to meet the public’s best interest.

As someone who served 18 years as an appointed Thousand Oaks traffic commissioner (for four different council members), I can think of much better ways to spend this money: mitigate traffic in local cities, improve our roads, fight the pandemic, get people back to work and help our businesses.

Bottom line, Meyer and the rest of the recall group knew the rules of engagement when they started this back in February, but they seem to be complaining now because they are not able to perform due to the lack of public support for their recall efforts.
