Candle lighting honors children who have died

The Ventura County chapter of the Compassionate Friends will host a candlelight memorial to honor children who have died at 7 p.m. Sun., Dec. 11 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1600 E. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks.

The memorial coincides with the Compassionate Friends’ Worldwide Candle Lighting, an event that “unites family and friends around the globe in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and grandchildren who left too soon,” organizers said.

Since open flames are prohibited, battery candles will be used.

Attendees can bring a framed picture (no larger than 8-by-10) of their loved one or a memento that can be placed on the steps of the altar at the church.

To make a reservation and to provide the name of loved one to be read aloud, call (805) 320-2302 or email gjanderson@sbcglobal.net. Names received before Tues., Dec. 6 will be included in the program; attendance is required for the name to be read aloud.

Guests are encouraged to bring a dessert to share after the ceremony in the church reception area. Donations will be accepted.
