Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

I would like to offer my personal support toward the proposal of the Los Robles Comprehensive Cancer Center. The cancer center was presented in a planning commission meeting on March 11, and will be discussed at the City Council meeting on March 26. Like most community citizens, I have personally observed the suffering and pain that many family members and […]

I am a local business woman who’s been in the community for over 40 years. In October 2021, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. In December 2021, I had surgery. Leading up to surgery, I had to go to several different locations for my biopsy, ultrasounds and surgery. In February 2022, I had radiation and this was a completely different […]

The proposed Los Robles Comprehensive Cancer Center is an important development to our community. Many of our loved ones have been diagnosed with cancer and it’s not just our grandparents. I personally know four women in their late 30s who were diagnosed with various cancers. Being able to get treatment locally saves on time and helps families be able to […]

What gives with the cops on Erbes?

Late last week I was enjoying a regular walk down Erbes Road just south of Sunset Hills Boulevard. I noticed two Sheriff’s deputies on small motorcycles hiding behind bushes at the intersection of Monte Carlo Drive and Erbes. Also, a woman was walking across the adjacent crosswalk. About 45 minutes later as I was returning in the opposite direction, I […]

Beloved preacher, teacher is missed

Last December Thousand Oaks lost one of her pioneer organizers when Rabbi Shimon Paskow passed away. Rabbi Paskow was one of the founding rabbis of Temple Etz Chaim. I met him in the winter of 1969-70 when canvassing his street seeking votes in the April, 1970 City Council election. He cordially invited me into his house, where I also met […]

What is our obsession with time change?

Spring doesn’t officially begin until Tues., March 19, but it sure feels like it’s here with the return of beautiful weather, blue skies and daylight saving time. The annual time change ritual took place last weekend, and by now we’ve all sprung forward. At least most of us have. There might be a few of us whose car dashboard clocks […]

Supports Los Robles cancer center in T.O.

The proposed new comprehensive Los Robles cancer center mentioned in the March 1 T.O. Acorn is a personal issue for me so I am responding on a personal basis; however, great changes happen when people work together, and my hope is that this issue will be addressed in that manner. To access the proposal details, go online to https:// ceqanet. […]

Don’t change E.R. doctors at Los Robles

I love Los Robles hospital and the people who work there. My son was born there and my daughter has been treated in the ER multiple times (she’s a feisty one). Compared to the big city hospitals I was used to, Los Robles is a breath of fresh air. This is why I am so upset that our local doctor’s […]

A special thank you to local doctor

I’d like to thank Dr. Mohammed Rezai for always caring about his community. After he finished his medical residency at UC Davis, the doctor helped at a local clinic that focused on addiction and primarily served Native Americans in Redding, California. From Rezai’s Medical School’s website, Touro University in Northern California: “Change your community through public service.” He took that […]

Get out the vote for local elections

The March 5 election was disappointing in terms of voter turnout in Ventura County. People are asking why the numbers were so low. Like with most things in life, there are likely multiple reasons, but I have to believe a large reason is people are oversaturated with politics. We get it night and day with a never-ending news cycle. Another […]
