Charter school selects new director

Kelly Simon Kelly Simon The board of Bridges Charter School has selected a new executive director.

Kelly Simon, who currently heads up the writing center at Azusa Pacific University, was picked earlier this month from a field of 17 candidates to lead the K-8 school, one of three charters in Thousand Oaks.

“Kelly Simon was identified as a perfect fit for Bridges,” said Marcy Crawford, president of the charter’s board of directors, in a letter to the school community. “Kelly comes to Bridges with a wealth of knowledge and experience in instructional leadership, growth mind-set and whole-child education.”

Simon, according to a press release from the school, is a published author who began her career as a classroom teacher. She went on to teach future teachers as a professor in UC Santa Barbara’s teacher education program.

Simon did her undergrad at the University of Toledo before receiving her master’s in creative writing from Cal State Fresno. She recently earned a doctorate in literacy, language and composition studies from UCSB.

Though she won’t officially become director until July, Simon will conduct a meet-and-greet during the board president’s regular coffee chat from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Fri., May 26 at the school, 1335 Calle Bouganvilla, Thousand Oaks.
