Jodi Regan, race coordinator, said volunteers are needed to assist in the race that attracts runners from around the world.

The Great Race, scheduled for March 19, was started 31 years ago by a group of parents who wanted to raise money for Agoura and Oak Park schools. The race has grown into one of the largest running events in the Los Angeles area and has raised more than $1.6 million for the local schools.

Regan said she’s hoping that responsible and enthusiastic volunteers will once again help out with the event.

The minimum age to volunteer is 14, but a younger child can work with an adult. Students can earn community service credit at their schools.

“This is a preapproved service learning opportunity for Las Virgenes Unified School District,” Regan said.

Volunteers are needed two days before race day, on March 17 and 18.

Known simply as the Great Race of Agoura Hills when parents were running the show, the race grew in popularity over the years and became so big that it is now professionally produced by Endurance Events.

Dole Foods is the leading sponsor.

The competition comprises six races. There are two half marathons, a 10K, 5K, one-miler and family fun run.

The Old Agoura 10K is ranked by Runner’s World magazine as one of the top in the country, and both the Chesebro and Pacific half marathons have been named Best Half Marathon in the Nation at Best of Active.com Awards.

Even the post-race party has been reviewed and ranked. The event has consistently been voted “L.A.’s Choice” by Active.com, Runner’s World and Los Angeles Sports & Fitness magazine, Regan said.

“Thousands of people participate every year and come from all over the world just to be part of the fun and of running through the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area,” Regan said. “There is something for everyone.”
