Local woman honored for volunteerism
Shur, a cancer survivor, is the founder of United Cancer Advocacy Action Network.
Since 2009, UCAAN has raised about $50,000 to provide resources and help for cancer patients all across the U.S.
On June 19, Senior Chaplain Dan Regan of the United States Chaplain Service presented Shur with the award and a signed letter from President Barack Obama.
The Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize the contributions volunteers are making in local communities and to encourage more people to serve.
The counci l created the Presi- dent’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.
The program continues as an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service.
