Charter to unveil new outdoor classroom

Area includes butterfly garden, life-size chess board

Bridges Charter School will host a ceremony to open its outdoor classroom for all children to enjoy at 1 p.m. Sat., June 1 at 1335 Calle Bouganvilla, Thousand Oaks.

The project began in August 2012 with a grant award from Whole Foods Market to create an outdoor learning environment.

By October 2012 a parent committee was formed to begin the design and planning phases of the outdoor classroom.

In November, Home Depot of Newbury Park offered community assistance to the project. By spring of this year, the outdoor classroom had been graded and was ready for the new walking path, seating area and children’s learning areas.

The various grade levels each contributed a theme to the plan. At the opening ceremony, those themes will be unveiled for the community.

The area includes a butterfly garden, water stream and lifesize chess board.

At the ceremony, the school will acknowledge the efforts of everyone involved including parents, community members, local businesses and student volunteers.

A celebration luncheon will be provided for school families and faculty.
