Saluting Our Scouts

Jared Simmons, 15, of Newbury Park, has earned the Eagle Scout Award, the highest advancement in the Boy Scouts of America.

Simmons will be recognized in a ceremony at 4 p.m. Sat., Feb. 9 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 35 Wendy Drive, Newbury Park. The public is welcome to attend.

Jared is a member of Boy Scout Varsity Team 6777.

Only 4 percent of all Boy Scouts attain the Eagle rank. Candidates must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a community, church- or synagoguerelated service project.

Jared planned, designed and built audio carts for Sycamore Canyon School in Newbury Park.

Jared has served as captain of his team and as senior patrol leader of his troop, among many other positions. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Scout is active in the mock trial team at Newbury Park High School, where he is a sophomore and an honor student. Jared is also a first-degree brown belt in Shotokan karate and a pianist.

He is the son of Elizabeth and Steven Simmons of Newbury Park.
