Council member succumbs to battle with cancer
City Councilmember Tom Glancy, who just last week handed in his letter of resignation to the city, has died. He was 71.
Glancy, a 32-year resident of Thousand Oaks, stepped down from the council on May 11 after his long bout with cancer took a turn for the worse.
In a press release sent out by the city Friday afternoon, Glancy’s wife, Karen, said: “Tom passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was a remarkable man in every way.”
Glancy was appointed to the council in 2005 and elected to a full term in 2008. The U.S. Navy veteran served as the city’s mayor in 2009 and was a planning commissioner from 1999 to 2005. He operated a successful dental business in T.O. for many years.
In reflecting on Glancy’s passing, Mayor Jacqui Irwin said in a statement: “Today, I lost a great friend and this community lost a real treasure. Tom’s warm demeanor, tireless work ethic, and sharp instincts were tremendous assets to this city. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Glancy family during this difficult time.”
Plans for a community memorial service are underway and details will be available next week.
