Strawberry Fest poster is local woman’s creation

RICHARD GILLARD/Acorn Newspapers Charis Werner of Thousand Oaks won the 2012 Official Poster Contest for the 29th annual California Strawberry Festival. She was awarded $2,000 at a luncheon on Feb. 28 at Yolanda’s Mexican Cafe in Oxnard.

Her poster will be featured on T- shirts, posters and merchandise at the festival, which will take place Sat., May 19 and Sun., May 20 at Strawberry Meadows of College Park in Oxnard.

Werner’s watercolor depiction of “Bringing in the Berries” was selected from 76 submissions.

When Werner retired after 30 years of working at beauty salons specializing in manicuring and makeup artistry, she enrolled in watercolor painting classes at Doyon Studio in Camarillo.

The Studio Gallery in Channel Islands Harbor will sell the poster and others before the festival at 2741 S. Victoria Ave., Oxnard.

Werner will also sign posters from the souvenir booth at the festival.
