Thousand Oaks insurance agent accused of filing thousands in false applications
A former Thousand Oaks insurance agent has been accused of submitting bogus insurance applications worth thousands of dollars in commissions.
Vincent Christopher Bellucci, 41, is scheduled for an early disposition conference on March 12 in Ventura County Superior Court, prosecutor Howard Wise said.
Bellucci pleaded not guilty to one count of felony grand theft Nov. 18, according to court records. If convicted, he faces a maximum of four years in prison.
From December 2009 to July 2010, Bellucci allegedly used false names, addresses and income information on long-term-care insurance applications and submitted them to Genworth Life Insurance Company, according to the California Department of Insurance. He’s also been charged with impersonating some of the fabricated applicants in follow-up phone interviews with Genworth employees.
Long-term-care insurance generally covers expenses for home health aides, skilled nursing, assisted living and nursing homes.
Bellucci received more than
$91,000 in commissions for the applications, said Dave Althausen,
Department of Insurance deputy press secretary.
Bellucci’s insurance license expired on Aug. 31, 2011.
“Defrauding an insurance company out of thousands of dollars doesn’t just hurt that company, it ultimately hurts consumers, as well,” insurance commissioner Dave Jones said in a statement released after the arraignment of the accused.
Althausen said the department cannot comment on Bellucci’s case while it is under investigation.
Investigations into criminal accusations against insurance agents may begin through a referral by an insurance company, insurance policy holder, the district attorney or police, Althausen said.
Investigators review the referral and determine if a probe is warranted, he said.
Bellucci is free on $20,000 bail.
From the early to mid-2000s in Thousand Oaks, Bellucci helped organize fundraising walks, called the Nico Challenge, to raise money for kidney disease research.
