Newbury Park flag should fly again
I would like to thank Mr. Hellebrand for his comments in the Aug. 11 Acorn (“Leave the American flag alone”) on the American flag that has flown over Newbury Park.
I’m afraid that the destruction of the flag and the pole goes deeper than just a few mean-spirited people who take pleasure in ruin.
Where is our American pride? It is systemic in this country to bash the patriots as being a group of zealots. It is much more acceptable to not stand for anything. Hence the saying, “If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.”
These patriots, at their expense, have installed three American flags for all to see and admire. To help us reflect on the sacrifices that others have made so that we can have the freedoms that we still enjoy.
However, with freedom comes responsibility, and there’s the rub. There is a growing part of the population that takes advantage of that freedom and uses it to destroy that which we, the majority, hold dearest.
I hope and pray that the effort to keep a flag flying over Newbury Park as well as other locations throughout the United States will continue. I will be happy to help, support and contribute time as well as funds to keep our flag flying.
Failure is not an option. Bob LaBass Newbury Park
