Senior standouts: La Reina High School
Ashley Lawrence The world is open to Ashley Lawrence. The 17-year-old plans to attend college in Switzerland, possibly to study communication.
At La Reina, Ashley earned academic honors all four years; she was a member of the Mock Trial team and captain of the speech and debate team, winning numerous awards in both arenas.
For years she’s volunteered to help feed impoverished families.
Regular conversations with her father have expanded her world view.
She envisions such diverse careers as an environmental protection attorney in Thailand, Mediterranean cruise director, Los Angeles-stage actress or highpowered New York CEO.
Ballet and physiology class taught Thea Percival the beauty of body mechanics. The 18-yearold, a five-year member of the Malibu Civic Ballet Company, plans to be a surgeon. Thea was an Advanced Placement honors scholar, Discus Award winner and member of La Reina’s Mock Trial, for which she won the Outstanding Prosecution Witness Performance Award.
Thea Percival Thea’s mother, Deborah Griffin, taught her to value the perspectives and needs of others and set high expectations for herself. After earning a medical degree, Thea wants to put her skills to work for humanitarian organizations. She plans to attend UCLA in the fall.
Nicole Walsh is passionate about music. A singer who’s performed twice at New York’s Carnegie Hall, the 18-year-old plans to attend Boston’s Berklee College of Music in the fall, looking forward to a career as a band manager. Nicole was a member of La Reina’s theatrical Regent Performers. She participated in student council and was awarded Student of the Month for kindheartedness and leadership abilities. She’s volunteered at church and the T.O. Teen Center.
Nicole finds her parents’ example of hard work and commitment inspiring, although she’d never tell them so. Travel, career success and adopting children are among her future goals.
Nicole Walsh Aspiring museum curator Michelle Atherton graduates as an award-winning academic leader and role model. The 17-year-old received the Girl Scouts’ two highest honors—the Gold and Silver awards. She’s earned the Discus Award for possessing uncommon attributes and won leadership accolades, such as the George Eastman Young Leaders Award.
A skilled athlete, Michelle served as captain of La Reina’s junior varsity and the Moorpark Express soccer teams, being recognized as most valuable player by the latter. She was a camp counselor and six-year Bible school volunteer. Michelle plans to study anthropology at Oregon’s Willamette University.
Writing didn’t come easy for Theresa Scanlon, 18. As a junior, she couldn’t earn better than a C on Advanced Placement English literature essays. But with determination, perseverance and help from teacher Christina Hirsch, Theresa improved her grade and developed a lifelong appreciation for the written word.
Michelle Atherton Captain of La Reina’s swim team, Theresa was also a member of the cross country team, Regents for Life Club, and book and culture clubs.
The fifth of 11 children, Theresa admires older sister Katie, a teacher who’s been a model of compassion, intelligence and optimism. Theresa plans to study English at a university.
