Three area artists win prizes at regional art museum show

More than 150 artists and patrons attended a juried art show and reception at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery in Newbury Park on Nov. 7. The inaugural event was hosted by the Regional Art Museum Task Force and the Thousand Oaks Art Association.
Frank Schillo, former Ventura County supervisor and RAM president, welcomed the crowd and introduced new charter members of the proposed regional art museum. Conceptual renderings of the museum by architect Francisco Behr were displayed, and museum membership information was offered.
Three cash prizes of $75 each for the Museum Choice Awards were presented to Yoka Yohanna for her watercolor “Sequoia,” Louisa Wallace Jacobs for her acrylic painting “Rocks Expanding” and Sheila Levine for her mixed-media piece “Lady in Green.”
The Thousand Oaks Art Association Awards were given as follows:
Watercolor: first place, Linda Shaner, “Snowy Forest”; second place, Phyllis Doyon, “Art Box No. 1”; third place, Pat Ellis, “Just Before Sunset.”
Oil and Acrylics: first place, Lisa Semler, “Zebra”; second place, Darla Warner, “Acorn Time in Old Agoura”; third place, Louisa Wallace Jacobs, “Rocks Expanding.”
Photography and Digital Art: first place, Howard Ehrlich, “Cinque Terre Italy”; second place, Tom Gamache, “Rothko County”; third place, Brent Shannon, “Seabees Repairing Roof in Kuwait.”
Graphics and Pastels: first place, Marjory Kron, “Rippling Sunlight”; second place, Judith Crowe, “Beach Stones”; third place, Annie Hall, “Somis Flower Field.”
Mixed Media: first place, Sherri Cassell, “Expeditions”; second place, Yoka Yohanna, “Waiting for Daddy”; third place, Pamela Fong, “Dance of Leaves.”
First place in sculpture went to Theodora Ilowitz for “Lion.”
The Thousand Oaks Art Association features more than 40 local professional artists in the November membership show, which continues at the gallery through Nov. 28.
Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Mondays and Thanksgiving Day at the gallery, 2331 Borchard Road, next to the Newbury Park Branch Library.
