10 Marmonte answers by Eliav Appelbaum
Marmonte League?
So many greats, and I can only pick one? Sheesh. How about Jordan Payton, wide receiver extraordinaire for Oaks Christian. Payton committed to USC as a sophomore, and he passes the guys-I’d-spend-hardearned cash-to-watch test.
Which Marmonte team
is the most talented,
from top to bottom?
Westlake has playmakers and St. Bonaventure has plenty of beef in the trenches, but the Lions will roar loudest in 2010. OCHS head coach Bill Redell has a team built on speed and bravado, like the old-school Miami Hurricanes.
Can any of these 10
programs go undefeated
during the regular season?
Five probably can, but will they? No way, Jose.
Which team will enjoy
a breakout campaign?
Royal. The Highlanders feature the most underrated QB in the league, Zach Collins, and enough skill players to stay in games. If the offensive line matures and the linebackers step up, watch out.
Who’s the league’s most
underrated player?
Going with two guys. Love Simi Valley’s Jens Jeters, a ferocious defender and tough ball-carrier. Westlake defensive tackle Justin Solis is the other. Solis devours soft-shell linemen with hollandaise sauce for brunch.
Best venue to watch
a league game?
Newbury Park High. Reminds me of autumn Friday nights in greater Indianapolis.
You’re down by
four points with three minutes to play. Who do
you want behind center?
Westlake’s Nick Isham. Kid’s a winner. Need proof? He completed 137-of-185 passes for 2,128 yards, 30 TDs and only three picks as a junior.
The league’s best defense is?
Moorpark. The Musketeers won’t get blown out because of their disciplined, intelligent and passionate defense.
Five guys you’ve heard
good things about?
Kamron Daftari, CB/WR, Agoura; Michael DiFronzo, LB/RB, Newbury Park; Mason Huether, DE, Royal; Beau Sandland, WR/DL, Simi Valley; Alex Singleton, DE/ TE, Thousand Oaks.
Will a Marmonte team play for a state championship
in December? Yes, it’s going to happen.
