3 to challenge in the park district
Conejo Recreation and Park District, a special agency formed in 1963 before the city was incorporated, will have an election on Nov. 2 for three of its five board of director seats.
The six candidates running for the seats include three incumbents— Joe Gibson, Susan Holt and John Short.
Challenging them are Ed Jones, Charles Huffer and Ramaul Rush.
Board members serve four-year terms and are compensated $100 per meeting, up to $500 per month. Usually there are two meetings a month.
Short was appointed in 2009 to fill the seat of former director Michael Berger, who resigned after 24 years on the board.
Jones is a government consultant and professor. Huffer is a financial planner. Rush ran for City Council in 2008.
The formation of the park district in 1963 was approved by 80 percent of the voters.
Citizens at that time wanted a government entity to provide recreational needs.
Upcoming issues include budget cuts due to property tax decreases, drought restrictions and a proposed park in Lang Ranch.
