Humane Society breaks ground for expansion

The Humane Society of Ventura County will host a groundbreaking for its Harry Valentine Visitor Center at 10 a.m. Wed., Aug. 18 at 402 Bryant St., Ojai.

In addition to a visitor center, the new 2,500-square-foot building will house employee offices, a reception/adoption area, a conference room/education center, a gift shop, storage area and bathrooms.

The building was made possible through a $2.4-million donation from the estate of Harry Valentine. Completion is expected in about a year.

After the visitor center is finished, the society will start the remodel and expansion of the spay and neuter clinic, allowing for an increase in the numbers of animals helped.

The shelter and clinic will remain open during construction.

The public is welcome to attend the groundbreaking, but reservations are due by Aug. 13. Call (805) 646-6505.
