At The Library

•A free poetry workshop will be offered at 2 p.m. Sun., Aug. 1 at the Grant Brimhall/ Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 E. Janss Road. The workshop will be presented by Moorpark College professor Sandra Hunter and the Poetry Performance Group: Word Slingers. Listen to poetry performed and learn to write your own. Bring a pen and paper.

•A story time program, “Off to a Great Start,” for children entering kindergarten will be offered from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Thurs., Aug. 19 at the Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library. The program will include tales, rhymes and finger plays to prepare the children for school. The phone number for information on this program is (805) 449-2660, ext. 213.

•A story time program, “On Your Mark . . . Get Set . . . GO,” for children entering preschool will be offered from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Thurs., Aug. 26 at the Newbury Park Branch Library, 2331 Borchard Road, Newbury Park. The program will include tales, rhymes and finger plays as well as a craft. The phone number for information on this program is (805) 498-2139.

•The Thousand Oaks Library will present free summer movie matinees.

“Up” will be shown at 2 p.m. Wed., Aug. 11 at the Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library and at 2 p.m. Mon., Aug. 23 at the Newbury Park Branch Library. The Oscar-winning animated feature tells the tale of Carl Fredricksen and stowaway Russell and their trip to South America via thousands of balloons. The film is rated PG and is 96 minutes.

“Hotel for Dogs” will be shown at 2 p.m. Wed., Aug. 25 at the Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library. Based on Lois Duncan’s novel, the story revolves around two orphaned teenagers who decide to turn an abandoned building into a safe haven for stray dogs. The film is rated PG and is 100 minutes.
