RICHARD GILLARD/Acorn Newspapers On the same day Major League Baseball’s finest clashed in the All-Star Game, local stars from Moorpark and Conejo Valley collided on the diamond.

Patrick Valdez did his best Ubaldo Jiménez impersonation, pitching a two-hit shutout gem to help the Moorpark Little League 11- and 12-year-old All- Stars defeat Conejo Valley, 3-0, Tuesday at Colina Middle School in Thousand Oaks.

The victory clinched the District 13 Tournament championship for Moorpark.

Valdez wasn’t the only standout for Moorpark, which advanced to the Section 1 Tournament that begins Saturday at Arroyo Grande Little League.

“It’s a team of 13 guys,” said Moorpark manager Doug Ziegeler. “We’re playing strong defense. We had tremendous base running, timely hitting and power hitting.”

Moorpark smashed eight home runs in the District 13 tourney, but used small ball to get by Conejo Valley.

Valdez, who finished with six strikeouts, drilled a hard infield chopper that allowed pinch runner Ryan Mitchell to score the game’s first run in the third inning.

Myles Guy, who batted cleanup Tuesday, followed with a bloop single to left field that plated Kenny Brawner.

Drew Ziegeler added some insurance in the same frame with a RBI groundout to complete the offense for the game.

Guy provided plenty of defensive theatrics at shortstop, impressing teammates and fans with a savvy double play in the fourth inning to dash Conejo Valley’s hopes for a comeback.

With runners on first and second, Guy fielded a grounder before stepping on second and whipping a throw in one motion to get the runner at first.

“He’s just amazing,” Valdez said of Guy. “He’s good. He pumped me up when he made that double play.”

Guy was pleased to pick up a back-to-back district title.

“We played great,” Guy said. “Everyone contributed.”

Erik Treadway pitched admirably in defeat.

The Conejo Valley pitcher had seven strikeouts before Jimmy Torosian cleaned up to get two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Max Gilliam and Bailey Holbrook notched singles for Conejo Valley.

“These guys have been playing together the last eight years,” Conejo Valley manager Jeff Gilliam said.

“They’ve kind of grown up together. This is a special time for them. I’m proud of the fact that they got to this point. It’s hard losing in a championship game. We still got here.”

Connor Chainy, Jake Resendez, Jack Rosenberg, Kyle McCormick, Evie Moss, Ben Martz, Mikel Irigoyen and Zane Mandell contributed for Conejo Valley. Coach John Torosian assisted Gilliam in the dugout.

Tyler Flores, Anthony Nevoso, Daniel Casillas, Nick Frangos, Dean Baker, Kobi Weisberg and Ben Kelman aided Moorpark’s effort.

Weisberg’s single in the third inning got Moorpark going. Coaches Matt Baker and Tony Nevoso assisted Doug Ziegeler.
