Arizona’s law had to be contested

Regarding Gordon Hayes’ July 1 letter (“At least Arizona is trying to discourage illegals”), he should reread my citation.

Does he know whether his California identification will be good in Arizona?

Does he realize that the governor of New Mexico can be jailed in Arizona if he’s caught in an Arizona photo speed trap because his New Mexico driver’s license cannot be used in Arizona to show legal residency? New Mexico issues driver’s licenses without proof of legal residency because New Mexico believes that illegals will drive anyway, and it’s more important that they drive with insurance.

As to constitutionality, I agree that this will be a matter for the courts, but even the conservative Roberts’ Supreme Court can read literally the United States Constitution, Article IV, Section 1 (Full Faith and Credit) and Section 2 (Privileges and Immunities).

Although Mr. Hayes’ clinical hysteria and paranoia can be rationalized, the Constitution speaks for itself here and clearly.
