Native Americans of all tribes to gather at powwow in Moorpark

Event to feature dancing, crafts

Redbird’s 2010 Children of Many Colors Powwow will take place Fri. to Sun., July 16 to 18 at the Moorpark College Athletic Field, 7075 Campus Road.

The powwow will feature Native American singing, dancing, arts, crafts and food. The public is welcome and all drums and dancers can participate.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. Friday with an open flute circle and potluck. The circle is open to all styles of flute music and all performers.

Saturday hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with gourd dancing and the intertribal powwow. A Prayer for the Children will be at 2 p.m. in the arena. All children are welcome.

Sunday hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for gourd dancing and intertribal powwow. Veterans will be honored at 11 a.m. during the gourd dance ceremony. All veterans are welcome.

The grand entry will immediately following the gourd dance. All of the Native American dancers enter the arena and then stand for a flag and victory song and invocation.

The grand prize raffle will be at 4 p.m. Sunday. The prize is a “Sacred Smoke” dark bay Tovero pinto mustang large model horse in full Native American regalia.

A $2 per vehicle donation is suggested. There is no admission fee.

Redbird is a nonprofit association that promotes the awareness and celebration of indigenous cultures and people and creating a sustainable future. Redbird is an all-volunteer organization funded entirely through donations.
