Thousand Oaks students take top academic honors locally, across nation

•Westlake Village resident Matthew Otte was among the 235 students who received graduate degrees from Providence College at the 92nd commencement exercises on May 16.

Otte received a Master of Business Administration degree through the college’s graduate school.

Providence College is the only college or university in the United States administered by the Dominican Friars. The Catholic, liberal arts college has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 3,800 students.

•David R. Simpson has received a PhD in biological sciences from the Watson School of Biological Sciences at Cold Spring Harbor Labs in Long Island, N.Y.

Simpson earned his degree doing cancer research at Cold Spring Harbor Labs and Vanderbilt University.

Simpson graduated from Thousand Oaks High School in 2000 and earned a bachelor’s degree in genetics from UC Davis in 2004. He is the son of Thousand Oaks residents Richard and Gayle Simpson.

•Carly Yamauchi of Newbury Park graduated from the University of New Haven on May 16 with a Bachelor of Science in forensic science.

Founded in 1920, the private university has an 80-acre main campus and an enrollment of approximately 1,700 graduate students and more than 4,000 undergraduates.

•Katy Wilhelm, 16, has won a spot in Attache, a performing show choir in America.

She has relocated to Clinton, Miss., and was recently selected as one of six new female cast members. Attache operates out of Clinton High School and is under the direction of musician/arranger David Fehr.

Katy attended Newbury Park High School before moving to Mississippi. She attended Sequoia Middle School and Meadows Elementary and is the daughter of Thousand Oaks residents Tim and Darlynn Wilhelm.

•Elias Friedman, a student at Thousand Oaks High School and a resident of Santa Rosa Valley, was selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars.

The society invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. Membership in the society entitles qualified students to a variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competition, resources, events, publications, online forums and publicity honors.

•Carolyn Laubender of Thousand Oaks received a Bachelor of Arts at Lehigh University’s 142nd commencement exercises at Goodman Stadium in Bethlehem, Pa.

•Michael Richards of Westlake Village was named to the spring 2010 dean’s list at Texas State University-San Marcos.

To be named to the dean’s list, a student must carry a minimum grade-point average of 3.50 and carry a class load of at least 12 hours.

•Michael Patlin of Thousand Oaks was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Quinnipiac University during its undergraduate commencement ceremony on May 16.

Quinnipiac is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian institution 90 minutes north of New York City. The university enrolls 5,700 full-time undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students.

•Peter Padden of Westlake Village graduated from Villanova University in Villanova, Pa., during a commencement ceremony on May 16 in Villanova Stadium.

Padden earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration.

Villanova University, a coeducational Roman Catholic institution, was founded by the Order of St. Augustine in 1842.

•Amina Ahmad of Thousand Oaks graduated from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine on May 15 with a Master of Science degree in public health. The university is in New Orleans.

•Leah Grossman of Thousand Oaks graduated from the Tulane University School of Science and Engineering on May 15 with a Master of Science degree. The university is in New Orleans.
