At The Library

The Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library and the Newbury Park Branch will both offer the summer reading program 2010 for children and teens from June 14 through Aug. 1. Participants can join at any time during this period.

The children’s reading club is Make a Splash—Read! Tweens and teens can take part in Make Waves @ Your Library.

The clubs have no requirements. Youths can explore the library’s collections and read whatever appeals to them. Children too young to read by themselves can have an adult or older sibling read to them.

Members are given reading logs and book bags upon joining and are urged to record whatever or how much time they read. Listening to books counts, too. The library has Playaways, audiobooks and bookcassettes. Additionally, there are puppets, music CDs, magazines and videos for all ages.

Each week Make a Splash— Read! club members receive small incentives to encourage them to keep reading and visiting the library. They also become eligible to enter contests and drawings to win other prizes.

Special programs will be offered, such as a mobile tide pool, a puppet show by the Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary or Bubblemania. Check the library’s website or call for dates and details of programs.

Make Waves @ Your Library is for youths entering sixth through 12th grade. Special events including movies, tie-dyeing, game nights, treasure hunts and splash art.

Club members submit a book rating form for each book they read. Drawings every week give teens the chance to win gift certificates from local businesses. Contests for teens are also offered.

The Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library is at 1401 E. Janss Road, and Newbury Park Branch is at 2331 Borchard Road.
