Citizen crime fighter helps T.O. police officers
In some towns, people look away when they see a crime happening, but in Thousand Oaks, one citizen got involved after witnessing a group of men beating another man unconscious.
Now police are looking for others who may have seen the crime occur on a busy intersection in Thousand Oaks last Saturday night.
Thousand Oaks resident Juan Huertas, 22, was taken to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center by ambulance after he suffered a concussion, cuts and bruises from what a police report described as a “severe beating” with a metal pipe at 8:15 p.m., Sat. May 22.
The site of the attack was the USA Gas Station at Janss and Moorpark roads, where Huertas had gone before he was repeatedly punched, kicked and hit with the pipe during what police described as a gang attack.
“Huertas tried to get away from the attackers, but they chased him and continued beating him while he was on the ground in one of the traffic lanes of Janss Road near the intersection of Moorpark Road,” the police report said.
Someone who observed the mayhem called police and followed seven subjects, who got into a Chevrolet Suburban and left the area.
That witness stayed on the phone with police, directing deputies to the alleged attackers.
Deputies stopped the Suburban near Erbes Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard, where they arrested Newbury Park resident Edward Kolodziej, 25, Thousand Oaks resident Carlos Gonzalo Ruiz, 18, Simi Valley resident David Hernandez, 18, a Newbury Park resident, 16, a Simi Valley resident, 17, and two Thousand Oaks residents, ages 17 and 15.
The names of juveniles aren’t released by police.
The three adult suspects were booked at the East County Jail in Thousand Oaks, and the four juvenile suspects were booked at the Juvenile Justice Center in Oxnard, the police report said.
All seven suspects remain in custody on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and committing a crime for the benefit of a criminal street gang.
Anyone who was in the area at the time and has information about the incident is asked by police to call Detective Jon Smith at (805) 494-8216.
Ventura County Crime Stoppers will pay up to a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and criminal complaint against those responsible for this crime.
The caller can remain anonymous and the call isn’t recorded.
Call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
