Armed robbers hit First California Bank
Police and the FBI are looking for two armed men who robbed a Thousand Oaks bank last week and struck a bank employee with a handgun.
The employee, who was told she wasn’t walking fast enough to the vault, was struck on the back of her head with the handgun.
The two men, who stormed into the First California Bank at 11 E. Hillcrest Drive at 10:30 a.m. on May 18, wore black ski masks.
They ordered the employee to walk to the vault so they could take money from it, Ventura County Sheriff ’s Department spokesperson Detective Eric Buschow said.
“It was a takeover, guns drawn robbery. There were no shots fired,” he said.
The two men were caught on surveillance recordings robbing the bank and leaving with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Witnesses described one man as an African American, 5 feet 10 to 5 feet 11 inches tall, 185 to190 pounds, wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt, gray ski mask, gray sweatpants and white tennis shoes. The other man was described as an African American, 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 9 inches tall, 185 to 190 pounds, medium build, wearing a dark sweatshirt, gray ski mask and dark pants. Both were described as being in their 20s or 30s.
“This robbery is typically what we see from a well-organized street gang from Los Angeles,” Buschow said.
Inside the bank were five employees— no customers, he said.
The two men left the bank area in a white sedan recovered less than a mile away at an apartment near Wilbur Road. The car turned out to have been stolen, the detective said.
“Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. In a situation like this it is best to give them what they ask and don’t argue with them,” Buschow said.
Anyone with information about the robbers is asked to call Detective Jon Smith at (805) 494- 8216 or Special Agent Patrick Conley of the Ventura FBI office at (805) 642-3995.
Ventura County Crime Stoppers will pay up to a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and criminal complaint against the person(s) responsible for this crime. The caller may remain anonymous and the call is not recorded. Call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
