Amgen Tour will affect Sunday traffic

Just a reminder: Some streets of T.O. will be filled with bicyclists on Sun., May 23 because Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills are hosting the Amgen Tour of California.

Patterned after the Tour de France, the Amgen Tour of California is the largest professional bicycle race the United States. The weeklong race will finish in Thousand Oaks.

Top-name cyclists expected to participate include seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, three-time Amgen Tour winner Levi Leipheimer and David Zabriskie, who placed second in the Amgen Tour last year.

City spokesperson Andrew Powers said he expects the event to be economically helpful to Thousand Oaks, with an expected 100,000 to 200,000 visitors coming to see the race.

For those not excited about bicycle racing, Sunday might be a good day to take a trip out of town.

The route

•Kickoff takes place at The Oaks mall.

•Racers will parade east down Thousand Oaks Boulevard, passing the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza and The Lakes, both good spots to catch the riders in action.

•After receiving the “green flag” on Townsgate Road (near the Hyatt Westlake Plaza), riders will continue through Westlake Village and Agoura Hills along Agoura Road.

•Riders will make four 21- mile circuits through the Santa Monica Mountains, including the “Rock Store climb.”

Street closures

Streets to be closed for the entire event weekend are:

•Townsgate Road from Westlake Boulevard to Lakeview Canyon Road

•Village Glen from Townsgate to Agoura Road

•Westbound Agoura Road from noon to 5 p.m. between Cornell Road and Westlake Boulevard
