Disc golf course to open

Conejo Recreation and Park District will host the grand opening of its Rabbit Flats Disc Golf Course at 11:30 a.m. Sat., May 22 at Thousand Oaks Community Park, 2525 N. Moorpark Road, Thousand Oaks.

Activities include free limited quantity flying discs, free disc golf lessons, free hot dogs and the inaugural Rabbit Flats Disc Golf Invitational Tournament featuring a re-creation of a hole from the first disc golf tournament.

The disc golf course is on 9 acres in the park, with nine baskets for beginners and 18 for the more advanced, playing from nine tees through challenging fairways.

The course was designed by local enthusiast Mike Byrne with input from semi-pro, pro and amateur players. The course is being built using mostly volunteers, service clubs, Scout groups and disc golfers.

In 1969, George Sappenfield, recreation supervisor for Conejo Recreation and Park District, introduced a new game to many adults by planning the first official Disc Golf Tournament. He asked Wham-O Manufacturing for help with the event.

Wham-O supplied Frisbees for throwing and Hula Hoops for use as targets.

Disc golf was born in the Conejo Valley.

Disc Golf now has its own professional organization (www .PDGA.com) of nearly 40,000 members, tournaments worldwide, and courses across the world.
