Camarillo man arrested in connection with rape

By Michelle Knight knight@theacorn.com

Police arrested a Camarillo man Saturday on charges of raping a woman.

Brandon Salzer, 35, was arrested at his Camarillo home the night of May 1 for allegedly raping a 29-year-old woman who was staying with him. The rapes allegedly occurred April 30 and May 1, said Capt. Ross Bonfiglio of the sheriff’s department.

Salzer was charged with rape, forcible oral copulation and corporal injury to a cohabitant, all felonies.

Bonfiglio wouldn’t disclose further details about the victim, except that she had a relationship with Salzer.

On Saturday Salzer was booked into Ventura County Main Jail, where he remained as of Monday. His bail is set at $100,000.

The number of rapes in Camarillo jumped last year, according to sheriff’s department statistics. Camarillo reported eight rapes in the first 10 months of 2009. In the city of 62,000 residents, four rapes were reported in 2008 and five the year before.

Moorpark, a city of 35,000 residents, reported one rape from January through October 2009. Moorpark had the same number of rapes as did Camarillo in 2007 and 2008.

Thousand Oaks, with a population twice that of Camarillo, reported 20 rapes in the first 10 months of 2009, 16 in 2008 and 21 in 2007.

The cities are three of five in Ventura County that contract with the sheriff’s department for law enforcement services. The department reported for the five contract cities and unincorporated areas 58 rapes in the first 10 months of 2009 and 53 for both 2007 and 2008.

Bonfiglio said a recent department study revealed most rapes in the areas covered by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department are committed by someone known to the victim. In 2008, for example, 80 percent of rape victims knew their assailants, he said. At times, rape victims have put themselves in vulnerable situations by consuming too much alcohol, trusting a person they don’t know well or ignoring feelings of discomfort about a person who later assaults them. Bonfiglio said he doesn’t intend to sound insensitive to rape victims but people should be aware of this finding so they can protect themselves.

Camarillo Police Senior Dep. Bob Maclean said one of the best rape prevention strategies is preparation. Follow your instincts and leave if you feel uncomfortable in someone’s presence. Have in mind what you would do and where you could go if accosted, he said.
