Stars waiting in line to roast Lions’ Redell
Question: Who’s the only guy in town with enough pull to get Wayne Gretzky and Joe Montana to roast him?
Answer: Bill Redell, of course.
“I was hoping we could get some name people,” said the 69year-old varsity football coach for Oaks Christian. “But we had to settle for Gretzky and Montana.”
The Coach Redell Roast is scheduled for Sun., May 23 at The Canyon club in Agoura Hills. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the OCHS stadium project.
In addition to the living legends, other roasters scheduled to attend are UCLA head football coach Rick Neuheisel, former UCLA coach Terry Donahue, Westlake High head coach Jim Benkert and many other surprise guests.
Has Redell ever been roasted before?
“Every Friday night,” he said.
Truth be told, the coach was roasted during his 65th birthday party. He said he survived the night and enters this event as a savvy veteran of the break-youdown process.
“The one thing about a roast is you get the last shot,” Redell said. “If you say something, I get to come back at you. The thing about me is I’ll make stuff up about you.”
Tickets can be purchased at www.oakschristian.org or by calling (818) 575-9268. It is a 21-andover event.
One person missing from the roaster list is Oak Park athletic director Dick Billingsley, the former Eagle football coach whose teams had some classic gridiron battles with Redell’s Lions over the years.
“You don’t bring a ham sandwich to a banquet,” Redell said of his buddy.
Now the gloves are off.
