Student musicians to compete for scholarship

The fourth annual Richard Carpenter Scholarship Competition will be Sun., May 16 at the Scherr Forum Theatre, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd.

Nine middle and high school and college student finalists will compete for first-, second- and third-place awards and scholarships as well as one top prize.

Last year’s overall winner was Katie Young, who also won first place in the college division.

Richard Carpenter and his daughters will perform at the show. Carpenter and his sister Karen recorded many hit pop songs in the 1970s.

The scholarship competition is made possible through the Richard Carpenter Endowment Fund established through the Alliance for the Arts, the official nonprofit fundraising arm of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
