Human stem cell research topic of Discovery Lecture

The Discovery Center for Science and Technology will present a Science Speaker Series lecture titled “The Potential and the Challenge of Stem Cell Research” by professor Dennis Clegg, co-director of the UC Santa Barbara Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Baxter Biosciences, 1 Baxter Way, Westlake Village.

Human stem cells have the ability to produce a variety of other cell types. Scientists are discovering numerous ways to use stem cells to cure a variety of diseases. Clegg’s UCSB team is developing stem cells that can replace the diseased cells in the eye that cause age-related macular degeneration, one of the leading causes of blindness.

The lecture is geared to adults and mature teenagers. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors, teachers and students.

This will be the final talk in the 2009-10 series. The 201011 series will begin Oct. 7.
