Strawberry Festival wants recipes for contest

The 27th annual California Strawberry Festival is hosting a “Berry Blast Off” recipe contest for the best non-baked strawberry dish.

The top two chefs will participate in a timed demonstration during the festival in Oxnard on May 15 and 16.

The grand prize is a fournight Carnival Cruise vacation getaway. The runner-up receives an overnight stay with deluxe suite accommodations at the Hilton Garden Inn in Oxnard and dinner for two at Outback Steakhouse in Oxnard.

The deadline is noon Fri., April 30.

Entries must be for nonbaked food dishes using fresh strawberries as a key ingredient. The use of a grill, fryer or stovetop is permitted. No restrictions apply on the type of recipe— sauce, dessert, main course, dip, drink, jam, spread, appetizer, snack or other.

Five finalists will be selected to compete in a timed “Iron Chef”-type competition the afternoon of May 4 at the professional kitchen of the Courtyard Marriott Oxnard, where contestants have 60 minutes to prepare and present their strawberry dish for judges.

No advance preparation is permitted for the timed competition. Strawberries will be provided, but finalists are responsible for other ingredients. The dish must serve six. All five finalists will receive prizes.

Rules and guidelines are available at http://strawberryfest.org/ or by calling (888) 288-9242.
