Why not student competition on the design of city logo?

Recently there was a picture of the proposed new logo for the city of Thousand Oaks. This logo cost the city $25,000, which is appalling, especially for such a trite piece of work.

The depicted tree does not look like an oak but rather an ash tree.

The city could have saved a lot of money and could have done some good by making the design of a new logo a competition open to students in Conejo Valley.

Scholarship money prizes of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 for first-, second- and third-place winners would accomplish a lot more than fattening the wallet of some commercial enterprise.

In addition, the city would have a logo if could be proud of.
