Strindberg Players to present ‘Dance of Death’

A concert reading of August Strindberg’s “Dance of Death” will be presented at 2 p.m. Sun., March 28 in California Lutheran University’s Overton Hall, next to the Soiland Humanities Center near Memorial Parkway on the campus.

A post-performance reception will take place at the Scandinavian Center, next to the campus at 26 Faculty St.

The August Strindberg Society of Los Angeles, a nonprofit organization of theater and film industry professionals dedicated to presenting the works and teachings of Strindberg, is producing the reading.

The Strindberg Players will read a new translation of “Dance of Death” by Anne-Charlotte Harvey, professor emerita of theater at San Diego State University.

“Dance of Death” is a biting but also funny verbal duel between an artillery captain and his wife, who are facing their 25th anniversary in self-imposed isolation in a fortress off the coast of Sweden. The pair, modeled on Strindberg’s sister and brother-inlaw, spends evenings in mutual blame and game-playing until an unexpected visitor disrupts the status quo.

The Scandinavian American Cultural and Historical Foundation and CLU’s theater arts department are sponsoring the free Scandinavian Lectures Series event.
