Elections are ugly enough without big business bucks

My commendations to Supreme Court Justices John Paul Stevens, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen G. Breyer and Sonia Sotomayer for their dissenting opinion on the issue of corporate funding of political candidates and issues. Chief Justice Roberts, Alito, Thomas, et al, argued that corporations and unions have the protection of the First Amendment. But can a corporation register to vote? A corporation should poll its investors before entering the political arena. But should corporations, with their overwhelming supply of funds, be able to drown out candidates with lesser funding? Corporations can drown out candidates they oppose by monopolizing the air waves.

U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd feels the Supreme Court’s decision on the matter will undermine our democracy by allowing foreign nationals to become involved in our political process.

Many of our corporations are involved internationally.

To counteract the Supreme Court’s decision, Congress will resort to public financing of political candidates. Sens. Dodd and Schumer as well as Public Citi zen are planning a constitutional convention to rein in corporate influence in the political arena and protect democracy for the average citizen.

They deserve our support.
