Seika Fukumoto, 16, a junior at Newbury Park High School, recently participated in the 2010 California All-State Honor Band. 

The band performed at the California Band Directors Association annual convention in Fresno Feb. 18 to 21 and will play again at the California Association for Music Education annual conference in Sacramento on March 11 to 13.

Fukumoto, who plays the clarinet, is a member of the Newbury Park High School Band under the direction of Dennis Crystal.

Auditions for the band are competitive, and this is the first time in recent years that a student from NPHS was selected. Two other students from NPHS also competed. 

Approximately 1,500 students from schools throughout the state auditioned for the band, and 18 were accepted from the Conejo Valley Unified School District.
