Bone marrow registration drive to help NPHS girl, 16
Mia Stoutenborough
A cycling fundraiser for the Be The Match Donor Registry will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Fri., Jan. 29 at the athletic club. The cost is $25 for the cycling class, and 100 percent of donations will go to the registry.
The registry drive is to benefit 16-year-old Mia Stoutenborough, a student at Newbury Park High School. She began having seizures last year, and in January she was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, a rare type of bone marrow failure. The disease prevents bone marrow from producing enough red and white blood cells and platelets, requiring the patient to receive weekly blood cell and platelet transfusions.
Last year Mia began immunosuppressive therapy, but the treatment had no effect. She needs a donor for a bone marrow transplant.
To sign up for the registry, donors will be given a swab kit and instructions on how to provide their tissue typing. When completed, donors will return the swab kit. Donors will remain in the national registry until their 61st birthday and will only be contacted if they are a match for a patient in need.
To make a reservation to register, call the athletic club at (805) 499-0023 or Donna Collins at (714) 334-7012
