Former St. Max music director presents concert

Internationally acclaimed local composer Frederick Bayani Mabalot returns to Los Angeles to conduct “Radiance,” his first concert of 2010, at 7:30 p.m. Sun., Jan. 31 in Murphy Recital Hall, Loyola Marymount University, 1 LMU Drive, Los Angeles.

For many years Mabalot was director of music in various churches in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, including St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Westlake Village, a position he occupied from 2002 to 2007.

The event will feature all of Mabalot’s original compositions, including his new song cycle, “Songs of Rumi,” with added movements, a newly revised and newly orchestrated “Song of Songs” and a new work for string quartet.

Leberta Loral, soprano, the soloist in “Radiance,” has appeared with the Monterey County Symphony, the Carmel Bach Festival and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2000 she became the soloist with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Pasadena Pops Orchestra.

The Lux Chamber Ensemble will provide orchestral accompaniment.

Born in the Philippines, Mabalot received his Bachelor of Music degree from Cal State Northridge. Since that time, he has been studying composition at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, Australia. He will pursue further studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England, in September.

Tickets for “Radiance” are $40 and will be available at the door or in advance by e-mailing frederickbmabalot@hotmail.com.
