Tall ship sails into Ventura next week

The tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain makes its annual voyage along the California coast and sails into Ventura Harbor on Thurs., Jan. 21.

The historical vessel will remain in the Ventura Harbor through Thurs., Jan. 28.

The topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain is a replica of a typical European merchant trader at the turn of the 19th century.

During the week the ship will be open to the public. Dockside tours will take place each weekday except Monday from 4 to 5 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in front of the Fisherman’s Memorial, near Andria’s Seafood restaurant in the Ventura Harbor Village on Spinnaker Drive. A donation of $3 is requested to support the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport educational programs.

New this year is Tours Aloft. Individuals can climb the rigging for a sailor’s view of the harbor and surroundings. A $20 donation is recommended.

Three-hour Adventure Sails with firing cannons and hoisting of the main sails take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sat. and Sun., Jan. 23 and 24.

Strolling pirates sing sea shanties from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
