OCHS faces Serra in clash of unbeaten powers

By Stephen Dorman sdorman@theacorn.com

As far as championship rematches go, this one ranks near the top.

The undefeated football teams from Oaks Christian and Serra high schools will do battle Friday night for the CIFSouthern Section Northwest Division crown.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Serra High.

Oaks Christian throttled Serra, 63-28, during last year’s Northwest championship, winning the program’s record-setting sixth consecutive Southern Section banner.

Lions head coach Bill Redell expects a much tougher fight from the Cavaliers this time.

“They had at least four skill players transfer in since last year, and they had great skill players anyway,” Redell said.

“In my 22 years of high school coaching, this is the fastest team that we will have played as far as skill players are concerned.”

Oaks Christian (13-0) enters the contest ranked third in the latest USA Today Super 25 high school football rankings.

MaxPreps.com has the Lions fourth in the state and 27th in the nation. Serra (13-0) is No. 16 in the MaxPreps state rankings.

OCHS has dominated on both sides of the ball all season.

Senior running back/linebacker Malcolm Jones, who was recently named Gatorade California Player of the Year, has already cemented his legacy as one of Oaks Christian’s gridiron greats.

This season, Jones has fueled the OCHS offense with 2,156 yards on the ground to become the program’s all-time leading rusher. Jones has found pay dirt 41 times.

Defensively, Oaks Christian pressures opposing passers with a stout front line featuring Cassius Marsh, Dillon Van Der Wal, Alani Fua, Weston Denham, Dakota Peterson and Austin Carey.

The Lion defense has tallied 55 sacks, 21 interceptions and 20 fumble recoveries.

Serra quarterback Conner Preston has thrown for 2,976 yards and 38 TDs. As a team, the Cavaliers have rushed for 2,365 yards and 36 scores.

Oaks Christian’s offensive line will be tested against a Serra pass rush that has recorded 72 sacks. Four players have doubledigit sacks for the Cavaliers.

“This is probably the best team we’ve played since I’ve been at Oaks Christian,” Redell said, “with the exception of St. Bonaventure.”
