Mental health specialist to address trauma and addiction among women
Gloria Miele, PhD, a mental health specialist, will discuss the treatment of women suffering from both trauma and addiction at a free presentation from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Mon., Nov. 30, in the Roth Nelson Room at California Lutheran University, Mountclef Boulevard near Memorial Parkway, Thousand Oaks.
Miele will discuss common issues that arise when treating women who suffer from both a history of trauma and the effects of substance abuse.
The Camarillo resident will draw on the 2009 book she coauthored, “Trauma Services for Women in Substance Abuse Treatment,” to explore the intertwined nature of trauma and addiction. She will also discuss some recently developed treatment options for people suffering from both post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction.
Miele is the former program director of The Women’s Health Project Treatment and Research Center. She now teaches clinical psychology in psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and directs training for the Long Island Node of the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Clinical Trials Network.
