There’s no reason for anyone in Thousand Oaks to be hungry or lonely on Thanksgiving Day.

The third annual Conejo Valley Thanksgiving Day Dinner will be at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Thousand Oaks, 588 Camino Manzanas, with neighbors and volunteers serving everyone who comes through the door from noon to 3 p.m. next Thurs., Nov. 26.

“We’ll offer a pickup service for those who are home-locked, who can’t get out on their own,” said organizer Jack Light.

Those who need a ride can call the church at (805) 498-4502.

“We need to get the word out. We want everyone to know where they can come for Thanksgiving dinner,” Light said.

This year they’re expecting 200 dinner guests. The first year they served 75, last year 165, and this year they’re preparing for a few more, Light said.

Turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, dinner rolls, pie and other Thanksgiving dinner trimmings will be on the menu. All the food is provided by donations.

Those who want to donate can bring nonperishable foods in advance to the church daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Perishable foods will be accepted after 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Grocery stores are now selling precooked turkeys that only need heating, and they’re preferred by organizers. They also “appreciate pies and anything anyone wants to donate,” Light said.

Anyone with special entertainment ability who would like to donate a performance during the dinner is welcome to come and add to the holiday spirit.

“We’d love to have a singing group come and perform. There’s a piano in the room,” Light said.

Those who volunteer to serve at the dinner usually do so instead of having their own family celebrations at home, he said.

But giving up their own family Thanksgiving to serve others is a blessing for them, and everyone leaves with a good feeling, Light said.

It’s a good way to start the holiday season.
