TVL squads a force in volleyball playoffs
BLOCKED OUT—Newbury Park High’s Amber Glaab, right, rejects a shot during Tuesday’s CIF-Southern Section playoff match against Edison. The Panthers lost in three games at home.
Three local Tri-Valley League powers are in the second round of the postseason.
La Reina, Oak Park and Oaks Christian will play tonight in Round 2 of the CIF-Southern Section Division 2A playoffs.
All matches start at 7 p.m.
Only one Marmonte League school, Royal, was able to advance to the second leg of the stacked Division 1AA bracket.
Here is a breakdown of local teams by division:
Division 2A
Fourth-seeded La Reina, the Tri-Valley League champions, earned an opening round bye and will play host to Paloma Valley.
La Reina head coach Don Hyatt said he hopes the strong competition in league—four TVL teams were ranked in the coaches’ poll at one point—will give the Regents an edge.
“I’m hoping this is a match we can get some nerves out,” Hyatt said.
Sophomore outside hitter Katherine Workman is La Reina’s go-to player.
Workman broke her own school record for kills by an outside hitter. She has 384 kills entering tonight; she posted 352 kills as a freshman. The school record for kills among all players is 451.
Madeline Rumer, a senior middle blocker, has also stepped up her game, especially passing.
Hyatt hopes junior opposite Sara Anselmo could return tonight or for Saturday’s third round. Anselmo, who is medically cleared to play, closed a car door on her hand on Oct. 30.
Oak Park is soaring after posting a four-game victory on Tuesday at Oxnard, co-champs of the Pacific View League.
“We did a real good job of slowing down their best player (Nicole Jarvis),” Eagles head coach Patrick Quinn said. “That was a very good start. It’s just a matter of showing up every night and getting the job done.”
The Eagles will play Cajon tonight at home.
Junior outside hitter Rachel Game is a force for Oak Park. Teammates Rachael Band, Hayley Verner, Lauren Varney, Kielie Tamiyasu, Megan Cummings and Kayla Smith are also playing well for OPHS.
Oaks Christian upended Valencia of Placentia in three games on Tuesday. The Lions play at Camarillo tonight.
“We’re looking forward to facing Camarillo,” OCHS head coach George Hees said. “We think that could be a fun match. We hope to play our best.”
Kim Koros, a senior captain and setter, has been playing very well, the coach said. Middle blocker Michele Boskovich is also a major contributor.
Division 1AA
Newbury Park opened the playoffs with a 25-15, 25-7, 2517 loss to Edison at home Tuesday. The Panthers finished second in the Marmonte to Royal.
Thousand Oaks didn’t fare well at Murrieta Valley, falling in three quick games. Simi Valley was swept by Harvard-Westlake.
Marmonte champion Royal advanced to Round 2 by defeating Mission Viejo in four games.
Hillcrest Christian out
On Tuesday night, Hillcrest Christian lost in four games to host Calvary Baptist in the D5A playoffs.
