Football Hall of Fame to open at Westlake
Memories were stashed in boxes at Westlake High and Jim Benkert’s home for years.
Those memories will now see daylight.
The Kevin Hames Memorial Westlake Football Hall of Fame will open to the public during Friday’s home football game against Moorpark.
“Now I have a place to put everything,” said Benkert, WHS’ varsity football coach. “I’m not done yet. I’m still working on it.”
Westlake championship plaques, rings, photographs, jerseys, helmets, programs and other ephemera are featured in glossy wood cabinets.
Benkert estimated the project cost between $80,000 and $100,000. The coach said the school received donations from members of the Westlake family.
