Mantooth will seek the office of Ventura County superintendent

Stan Mantooth announced his candidacy for Ventura County superintendent of schools during a Nov. 2 press conference in Ventura.

Mantooth, a Camarillo resident, was appointed county superintendent in September 2008. He replaced Charles Weis, who took a similar position in Northern California.

The county superintendent oversees the Ventura County Office of Education, which provides support and mandatory oversight services to local school districts.

Mantooth has worked in education for more than 34 years.

From 1996 until his appointment as county superintendent, Mantooth served as associate superintendent for administrative services with the Ventura County Office of Education.

He helped oversee the expansion of Internet and wireless microwave services to all county school districts and the funding and construction of the new 65,000-square-foot Conference and Educational Services Center in Camarillo.

As county superintendent, Mantooth serves on a variety of committees and commissions, including First 5 Ventura County, the Workforce Investment Board, Ventura County P16 Regional Council, Community Commission of Ventura County, the Juvenile Justice Coordinating Council, the Discovery Science Center, University Preparation School board of directors and the Ventura County School Boards Association.

Mantooth has a bachelor’s degree from Cal State Northridge and a master’s degree in school business administration from Pepperdine University.

He was a faculty member at Pepperdine University and the University of La Verne and teaches part-time at the California State University Channel Islands and Northridge campuses.

Mantooth, 58, grew up in the Los Angeles area. He has three adult daughters and one grandson.
