Ventura County Treasurer-tax collector Larry Matheney recently announced that he doesn’t intend to run for reelection.

“I feel drawn to pursue other interests and to make way for someone new to take on the privilege of running this great office,” said Matheney.

Matheney took office on Sept. 1, 2002, after being appointed by the board of supervisors to fill the unexpired term of his retired predecessor, Harold S. Pittman.

As county treasurer, Matheney has also served as a member of the board of retirement of the Ventura County Employees’ Retirement Association.

Matheney plans to retire and devote more time to his family and his church and to travel.

The filing period for the position will open the week of Feb. 15, and the primary election for the seat will take place on June 8.
