Bone marrow drive to help 16-year-old
A bone marrow registration drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat., Nov. 7 at Gallardo Automotive Services, 881 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks.
The purpose of the drive is to register people in the Be The Match Registry as a potential donor for a bone marrow transplant. No marrow will be taken at this time.
Potential donors must be between the ages of 18 and 60, be willing to donate to any patient in need and be able to meet the health guidelines.
At the drive, applicants will complete a consent form, take a brief medical evaluation and be given a mouth swab for a sample of their tissue type.
The drive is being conducted for Mia Stoutenborough, a 16year-old student at Newbury Park High School. In January she was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, a rare type of bone marrow failure. Her body is not producing platelets or red or white blood cells. So far she has been unresponsive to treatment and needs a bone marrow transplant.
